On the footsteps of "The Death of Mr. Lazarescu”, another Romanian film gets the opportunity to run in cinemas across the Ocean. "A fost sau n-a fost" (Was it, or was it not?) of Romanian director Corneliu Porumboiu, has been shown with success to US media critics at a New York event.
Backed up US company with a strong publicity campaign, the film will run in US theaters starting June, under the title "12:08 East of Bucharest".
Porumboiu’s first movie, „A fost sau n-a fost” has already received a series of major international awards, in Cannes included. It is also expected to be given a special event at the Tribeca Film Festival to be organized by Robert de Niro in late April.
Received by US critics as a comedy “sharp as a knife”, the film depicts a TV show on the December 1989 revolution in Romania - but 15 years after those events, and in a small town in a poor region of the country.
Speaking to HotNews.ro at the Romanian Cultural Institute in New York, Corneliu Porumboiu said he believed Romanian movies have started to create a specialized circuit luring moviegoers that like a specific director.
