European Commissioner Leonard Orban said in statements made for HotNew.ro in Brussels on Monday that he regretted the low turnout at the first European Parliament elections that took place in the country on Sunday. But he said the poll was fully democratic and proved a strengthening democracy in Romania.
Multilingualism Commissioner Orban, who represents Romania in the European Commission, said he believed that once debates on European issues multiply in Romania citizens would prove more interested in European elections and better understand their importance.
The overall turnout stood slightly above 29% in the Sunday elections in Romania, according to Electoral Office data. Romania will have 35 representatives in the European Parliament.
