The Romanian Government must give back the money it received for taxing the first registration of vehicles, European Tax Commissioner Laszlo Kovacs declared on Thursday, in an interview for RFI. Kovacs mentioned that he discussed the tax, considered by the European Union as discriminatory, with Prime Minister Calin Popescu Tariceanu.

Even in case Romania changes its legislation so that it would come to terms with the European legislation, the money must be refunded. Kovacs offered Hungary as an example, where a similar situation took place. The Romanian government may adopt an emergency ordinance in order to align the local legislation with the European One.
