Out of 1,300 water purification facilities existent in the country, only 40% work properly, Environmental Minister Attila Korodi declared on Wednesday. Bucharest, Craiova, Braila, Galati and Tulcea are just a few cities where, according to Korodi, used water is drained straight into rivers.
Even if European ISPA funds poored into the country some 1.2 billion euro for water purification facilities, more than 50% of the drained water does not pass through purifying processes, the Minister announced.
Still, a part of the problem can be dealt with by accessing more European funds destined to improve Romania's Environmental facilities in the next five years. Korodi mentioned that Romanian authorities may receive up to 3.3 billion euro for related projects.
In this vein, Environment Minister Korodi announced that local authorities have already tabled five projects with a total value of 560 million euro that need to be approved.
