Prime Minister Vasile Tarlev and the entire Government of Moldova tabled their resignation on Wednesday, in a governmental session attended to by Moldova president Vladimir Voronin, sources in the Kishinev Presidential Administration inform. According to the same sources, the decision was determined by the intention to "clean up the Moldova Communists' Party".

Tarlev thanked the members of the government and president Voronin for the trust granted so far and said that "we did a lot, but other people must also have the chance to follow in working for the benefit of the country". President Voronin added that a new impulse is necessary: "The people get tired of seeing everyday the same faces in the same offices. We need new, younger people, with modern thinking, to continue the reforms begun by this cabinet".

Vasile Tarlev has been the head of the Government since 2001, when the Communists' Party won the elections, being re-elected as prime minister in 2005.

President Voronin announced that the party has set five targets for Moldova: high social standards, true democracy, firm social protection, competitiveness of the country on an international level and national security.
