The case of Claudiu Curlic, a Romanian who died in a Polish prison after entering a hunger strike, is an exception and dramatic case, Romanian Foreign Affairs Minister Adrian Cioroianu said in a joint press conference with the Polish Ambassador to Bucharest. He added that his relation with the Polish justice did not matter more than his treatment in the prison. Moreover, he assured his family that Romanian authorities were currently investigating the case to determine what actually happened.
Cioroianu added that Romanian authorities were pressing their Polish counterparts to determine the exact causes which lead to the tragic event. He revealed that his ministry was ready to send a team to check on the case.
At his turn, Polish Ambassador Jacek Paliszewski urged Romanians not to draw any conclusions until an official investigation presents its findings. The Polish Ambassador expressed his compassion for Curlic's family.
Claudiu Daniel Curlic was arrested on September 2007 together with his girlfriend, accused of stealing from a judge. While retained, Curlic argued that he was innocent and entered a hunger strike.
