The acquisition of four Prodas supermarkets in Bucharest by Mega Image network, a deal Delhaize Belgian retailer announced last week, reveals a 35-year-old retail business owner, who collected around 5m euros from this deal.
At the moment this takeover was announced, neither the Belgian retailer, nor the representatives of Prodas Holding Supermarket stores disclosed any information on the operating company or its shareholders, but according to the information printed on store cash receipts, Prodas Holding Supermarket stores are operated by Mialan Comimpex company. The company is controlled by Daniel Georgescu, 35, who owns 95% in it, according to Trade Registry data. Contacted by ZF, Georgescu chose not to provide any details about this business. Daniel Georgescu and his father were on the seller's side, and the transaction amounted to approximately 5 million euros, market sources told ZF.
The announcement made by Mega Image owner has brought to the spotlight for the first time the Prodas network, one of the biggest Romanian-held food retailers in Bucharest. The four stores that were taken over, which are not the only stores operated by Mialan Comimpex, last year generated sales worth 12m euros, according to the data provided by Delhaize. They have areas ranging between 400 and 750 square metres.
Mega Image is currently the biggest supermarket network in Bucharest, with 37 operational stores and sales put by ZF at over 100-120m euros for 2008.
