Timisoara-based businessman Josef Goschy, who controls 3,500 rooms in 25 hotels posted 4.4 million-euro business in the first quarter, down 32% compared with the same time of last year.
The revenues generated by each room stood at a little more than 14 euros per day (59 RON), according to ZF’s calculations, which, however, do not take into account the occupancy rate of hotels, that is the number of rooms that generated revenues in the first three months of the year.
"In the first three months of the year, the average occupancy rate stood at 21.9%. Last year we operated at an average occupancy rate of 50% for the entire 2008," stated Josef Goschy, owner of Unita Tourism.
The occupancy rate of over 20% in the first quarter can also be explained by the fact that more than 40% of the Unita Turism group’s hotels accommodation capacity, 1,460 rooms, are located on the seaside and as such are only open during summer.
Average revenue per room of the four-star hotels held in Mamaia amounted to 308 RON (83 euros) per day during the summer of 2008. As for the three star hotels, a room generated 260 RON (70 euro) revenues. "Most profitable hotels last year were those in Mamaia, as well as the Belvedere in Cluj Napoca and Moldova in Iasi," he added.
Goschy is one of the most important owners of seaside hotels, with his three hotels in Mamaia (Comandor, Amiral and Orfeu), three in Olimp (Amfiteatru, Belvedere, Panoramic) and two in Cap Aurora (Onix and Safir). On the Romanian seaside Goschy competes with businessman Mohamad Murad, who controls the Majestic chain with hotels in Mamaia, Olimp and Jupiter.
