Andrei Pavel left the last Grand Slem of his career after the first tour. The Romanian was defeated on Wednesday at US Open by Robby Ginepri, score 5-7, 6-2, 6-4, 6-0. Therefore, Romania's single left competitor in US Open is currently Sorana Cirstea. Pavel is still bound to play another match in doubles, next to Horia Tecau in the men's competition, but also alongside Monica Niculescu in the mix double.
In the doubles competition, Sorana Cirstea (Romania)/ Caroline Wozniacki (Denmark) qualified in the second round after defeating Sybille Bammer (Austria) and Julia Schruff (Germany), score 6-4, 6-2. Romanian pair Alexandra Dulgheru and Raluca Olaru did not enjoy the same success: they were eliminated by the Russian pair Alisa Kleybanova/ Ekaterina Makarova, score 6-2, 4-6, 6-3.
