A Senator and prominent leader of the National Liberal Party (PNL, now in opposition), has called on political groups to show unity and support the formation of a technocratic government in Romania, warning that otherwise the country risks a years-long crisis. PNL vicepresident Teodor Melescanu made the call as the governing coalition of Social Democrats (PSD) and Democratic Liberals (PDL) collapsed on Thursday.
He said the key issue in the current situation, in which PSD ministers have left the government and let PDL to govern on an interim basis, was not "the fate of political people or of a party", but "the everyday life of Romanians and the future of Romania".
Unless the political parties drop their differences and show unity, "Romania risks a crisis that will last years" and would burden it with debt.
