Romanian Razvan Nicolescu was elected member of the Energy Regulation European Agency Administration Council, with a six-year mandate, in the Wednesday's evening polls where the 27 EU member states' ambassadors voted. Out of the 11 candidates, Nicolescu got most votes, which mans a new success for Romania at the EU level, following Dacian Ciolos getting the portfolio for Agriculture.
Nicolescu's counter-candidates proposed by the EU members were well-known names in the energy department and were ministers or vice-ministers in the countries that proposed them. The Romanian candidate won against an ex-Economy minister, two current vice-ministers and against the ex-International Energy Regulation Agency Administration Council president.
Nicolescu is 32 and his CV is representative for the energy department. For three years (2006 - 2008), he was Romania's representative at the EU for energy issues. Currently, he holds Petrom's Corporate Public Affairs role. He ran also against candidates from France, Italy, Germany and Poland. The European Agency for Energy Regulation is a new EU institution, due to play an important role in regulating of the electricity and natural gas European market. The European Commission announced on Monday that the agency's headquarters was set in Libljuana. Romania subscribed for being the host country, next to Slovakia.
Having Nicolescu elected in the Agency's board is Romania's second EU recent success, after Dacian Ciolos was designated Agricultural commissioner.
