Products containing acetylsalicylic acid generated cumulated sales worth 9.9m euros in December 2008-November 2009 period, namely 0.5% of the entire pharmaceutical market worth 1.9bn euros last year, according to the data provided by Cegedim Romania market research firm. The dwindling purchasing power last year had a strong impact over acetylsalicylic acid-based drugs, whose sales dropped by 20% in volume and 11% in value, according to Cegedim data. The crisis did not spare Aspirin, either, the "old" drug brand, present on the Romanian market ever since 1929, which was also taken over by most domestic drug makers and produced in their own facilities. Though one of the oldest products, Aspirin is not among the cheapest. For Romanian products, the price stands at over 3.5 RON, while the price for imported products tops 11.5 RON. It is only Germany's Bayer that can use the Aspirin or Aspirina brand, while the rest of products have names derived from acetylsalicylic acid.
