Wim Vermeulen, Director of Innovation at Ogilvy Group, Central and Eastern Europe, said 2010 is shaping up to be a huge year for mobile web, when it may reach its axis point upon the entry of Google and Apple in the market.
“If in the past seven years, people would say this was the year of the mobile web, in 2010 we’re actually seeing the mobile internet taking hold. And that due to the entry of Google and Apple in the market”, said Vermeulen, at the fourth edition of Digital Marketing forum.
However, it will take around 2-3 years before Internet users access the internet from their smart phones rather than from their PCs. “It will all depend on how fast the adoption rate of smartphones will increase”.
A survey found that 40% of smartphone users go online from their handsets more often than from their personal computers.
At the same time, the survey found that the most popular sites accessed from the mobile phone are social networking sites. As of December 2009, smartphone users in UK spent 2.2 billion minutes on Facebook from their mobile phones and 395 million minutes on Google, 165 million minutes for Microsoft web pages and 138 million minutes for Orange.
It is estimated that a third of Western Europe internet users will go online from their mobile phones until 2014.
