Doru Maries, president of the December 21 Association, announced today that he gives up hunger strike. The announcement was made after a meeting with representatives of several civic organisations and Deputies Chamber Speaker Roberta Anastase, who assured him that the Lustration Law would be adopted by the Parliament on May 20, Mediafax informs.
"Bearing in mind the result of the discussions and the fact that we've set up a clear schedule for adopting the Lustration Law, I inform you that from this moment I quit hunger strike. Today I saw that there is political will and adopting the Lustration Law was the last request for which I was militating", Doru Maries said.
Roberta Anastase announced that there will be a new discussion regarding the Lustration Law on April 13, "with the amendments on the table". On May 20, this could be adopted by the Parliament.
"We hope to see the correct Lustration Law adopted on May 20. We will amend the draft approved by the Senate with has been subject to make-up, according to the NGO representatives. Alongside our colleagues from the National liberal party, we've got a majority in the Permanent Office and this will help us solve the problem quickly."
According to his own statements, Doru Maries was hunger-striking for 78 days, meaning from January 12 until Tuesday, March 30. He says he now weights 52 kilos.
