By operating from secondary airports and airports outside Bucharest, targeting passenger masses through low prices, levying extra taxes for additional services and by distributing plane tickets online, Wizz Air airline came to hold an over 18% slice of the market last year, according to ZF estimates taking into account a total of 9 million passengers transported in Romania last year. Market share refers only to the number of transported passengers, and not to the value of revenues, which are higher as a rule in the case of regular airlines. Thus, after an extremely shy presence on the market in 2006, when the Hungarian company transported 17,000 passengers, Wizz Air last year reached traffic of 1.7 million passengers, a level placing the company in the battle for the leading position on the air transport market in terms of traffic. The Hungarian company is set to maintain the growth trend this year, with Wizz Air expected to carry 2.1 million passengers. "The results of the first four months show estimates regarding a 30% traffic increase will materialise," states Natasa Kazmer, communication manager of Wizz Air.
