RCS&RDS, one of the leading telecom operators in the region, has introduced a 5-RON fee per month since May 18th for the fixed telephony service previously offered free of charge for clients of Internet or cable TV services, according to data on the company's website, as well as from employees in the company's call centres.
This is one of the most severe corrections in RCS&RDS's pricing policy, considering that the decision to boost fees could affect over one million clients. RCS&RDS had 1.5 million fixed telephony clients at the end of last year - according to market estimates - a big share of whom received the services free of charge, as a bonus to cable TV services or to Internet services. The five RON per month fee could bring RCS&RDS around 8 million euros in revenues by the end of the year, if the fee were to be charged only to one million clients.
"The offer has been in place for two days now. Subscriptions cost either 2 euros per month or five RON per month - both include VAT," explain operators in RCS&RDS call centres. RCS&RDS officials could not be contacted by the time this issue was ready for print.
