The BURSA newspaper recently reported the incredible stories of Pal Emeric and of the former UDMR deputy Dezideriu Garda, two people who had to withstand serious adversity after fighting the logging mafia for years. The first, Pal Emeric, was attacked in his own home in April, by people paid to kill him, according to his own statements. Following the attack, him and his mother were hospitalized with multiple contusions (ed. note: the case was extensively covered in the article "Assassination attempt on one of our interviewees", published on April 29th). The assassination attempt on Pal Emeric took place after his interview for BURSA. In that interview, Emeric and Garda discussed abusive land and forest retrocessions, and illegal logging in the county of Harghita (ed. note: the revelations were made in the article " THE UNTOLD STORY OF OUR MISSING FORRESTS: An unhealed 6 billion dollar wound in the heart of Romania", published on March 8th 2010). What"s more, in just a few days after being assaulted in his own home, Pal Emeric found himself sued by the Mayoralty of his hometown for "harming the honor, reputation and the right to a decent image" of several public sector employees. The trials of the fighters against the illegal logging mafia continues. At the same time, the USD 6 billion hole in the Romanian forest fund grows every day.
