Tudor Serban, Secretary of State in the Economy Ministry, said that because domestically-produced gas, which is twice as cheap as imported gas, has been sold for almost a year to big industrial consumers, mainly to the chemical industry, the domestic gas sector has been loss-making, which is one of the reasons for the fact that there is no money for investments. Last year, the state devised an anti-crisis measure whereby the big industrial consumers, especially those in the chemical industry, received domestically produced gas. Although it was supposed to last from June to October 2009, the measure was extended by one year, until October 2010. "Selling domestic gas is loss-making. This is one of the reasons for which we don't have money for investments. The situation is only relatively right. Anyway, supporting the chemical industry with cheap gas is not sustainable in the long run," Serban said at the Mediafax Talks About Energy conference, without, however, giving a concrete answer as to elimination of this measure before October 2010 or not under the circumstances.
