All hotels built last year ranged between 20 and 60 rooms, with most rooms rated as three or four stars, as the hotel market no longer had money for the sizeable investments of 2007-2008, writes Business Magazin magazine.
During that period nobody wanted to build hotels with less than 100 rooms. Consultants in the field even complained that all investors had big plans for hotels with tens or hundreds of 4 and 5-star rooms. Not only Bucharest, but other cities across Romania, as well, reached the targeted number of hotel rooms via large hotels: Radisson SAS (450 rooms), Rin Grand (1,500 rooms), Europe hotel in Iasi (210 rooms), and Continental Forum (Sibiu), which, together with Ibis Sibiu (also held by Radu Enache), owner of Continental, cumulates over 200 rooms.
Last year's surprise came from the fact that, despite small hotels being built, the price per room built was higher than in past years, with most money spent on the attention to details and on marketing. As a result, five small hotels that opened in Bucharest in the last few years climbed to the top positions on booking.com and tripadvisor.com, becoming the most popular hotels in Bucharest among travellers. The best-rated hotel on specialised websites is Christina.
