George Naghi, one of the best-known Romanian entrepreneurs and a stakeholder in Aldis C`l`ra[i charcuterie producer with 70m-euro turnover, says he has given up on profit to sustain turnover, as the population is purchasing ever cheaper products. Last year, the C`l`ra[i-based producer saw its gross income halve, from 7m RON (1.9m euros) to 3.2m RON (0.76m euros). "This year, we're not looking at profit any more. We just want to maintain our market share and turnover. Ever cheaper products are being sold and this trend will maintain as the population has ever less money by the day," said George Naghi, a stakeholder and chairman of Aldis, a company ranking among the five biggest domestic charcuterie producers, a market still dominated by family businesses. This was the reason why Naghi says he has decided not to raise prices for Aldis products this year despite Gvt. measures. In the past year and a half, discounts and promotions have rapidly become the main food product acquisition criterion amid the economic downturn. This has generated turnover declines both for Aldis and its main rivals, Cris Tim, Unicarm, Angst, Caroli and Elit Cugir.
