An illegal gypsie camp with about one hundred Romanian gypsies was evacuated in Saint Etienne, in the Loire area on Friday morning with the help of the Montmartre police, the association Reseau Solidarite Roms declared, quoted by the French daily Le Figaro.
The operation started on Friday morning and is currently in full process. The area was surrounded by police. This is the first evacuation of a camp after the Presidency announced a week ago a series of measures against gypsies.
French authorities announced last month that they will shatter all illegal camps and will expell gypsies from other EU states who commit fellonies in France. The declarations follow a special meeting called by President Sarkozy who warned that minorities create a security issue in France.
