Six out of ten Romanian passengers travelling with British Airways on the Bucharest-London route continued their flight on long-haul routes to destinations in the US, Africa or Asia, says Bulgarian-born Emil Delibashev, commercial manager of British Airways for the Balkan area, who last year took over the reins of operations in 11 countries.
By comparison, in 2009 only four out of ten Romanian passengers transited the London airport to go to destinations across the ocean.
BA, which operates three daily Bucharest-London flights in Romania, ended financial year April 2009-March 2010 with turnover worth 15m euros and expects this level to be exceeded in the current financial year.
"Transatlantic flights will help turnover pick-up," stated the head of BA, whose aircraft operated at 90% of capacity on Bucharest-London route this July.
Delibashev also specified the destinations in highest demand among Romanians on long-haul flights were Johannesburg of South Africa, which hosted this year's World Football Championship, Hong Kong, Miami and New York.
