Clients still buying a car almost exclusively on the basis of price and the car dealers that have reorganised their business and cut personnel are the two "pillars" of the problems the Romanian car market is experiencing, believes the head of Porsche Romania, the biggest importer domestically and vice-president of Romania's Automotive Manufacturers and Importers Association (APIA).
"2008 was a year of sacrifice. Models were cannibalised, inventories were sold off, and huge discounts were offered. But it is over and last year and particularly this year things have settled. Unfortunately, many clients still want to buy a price, not a car," stated Brent Valmar.
The reorganisation of Porsche Romania, which even during a crisis period manages to generate profit worth almost 40m euros in 2009, down 46% year-on-year, but still topping that of all the other importers put together, entailed reducing headcount by about 10% to less than 160 employees and identifying new streams of revenue, from servicing operations.
