Over 2,600 Romanians received medical treatment outside Romania last year. These are the first data to emerge, showing how many Romanians benefited from medical care abroad covered by the state.
The Romanian state last year spent 37.2 million RON (8.7 million euros) via the Health Ministry and the National Health Insurance House (CNAS) by reimbursing medical services provided to Romanian patients abroad, according to data centralised by ZF.
The two institutions are involved differently in reimbursements. The CNAS makes reimbursements for services provided abroad for people who travel or who moved to other countries, but are insured in Romania, while the Ministry covers procedures performed when the treatment is not available in Romanian hospitals. There is another category of reimbursements that CNAS can make - if someone wants to be treated abroad, the costs can be borne by CNAS, but to the extent covered by fees charged in Romania.
