Romanian food retail, which includes hypermarket, supermarket, discount and kiosks, accounts for 13% of the Central European market, worth 100 billion euros per year, which is clearly dominated by Poland.
"Food retail markets of all Central European countries - Hungary, the Czech Republic, Poland, Slovakia and Romania will increase, but the contribution of each country to the regional growth will be different, mainly because the markets differ in size and in terms of dynamics," says Dominika Kubaka, analyst on the retail segment within PMR research company, and co-author of the report "Grocery retail in Central Europe 2010. Market analysis and development forecasts for 2010-2012".
Romanian food retail, put at 13 billion euros in 2009, will rise by 1.5% this year, according to the PMR survey, with the increase largely generated by the opening of new stores.
In the region, i.e. in the five mentioned countries, food retail will reach 102.8 billion euros this year, compared with around 100 billion euros in 2009. Romania's share of this market was 13% in 2009, similar to Hungary's and the Czech Republic's, and four times lower than Poland's.
