Astra Asigurări, the biggest insurer, owned by businessman Dan Adamescu, in the first nine months of this year derived net income worth 18m RON (4.3m euros), four times higher than a year ago, while the volume of gross underwritten premiums advanced by 37%, to 841m RON (201m euros).
In the third quarter alone, the company sold policies worth 260m RON, up 30% from a year ago. The net income for the July-September period stood at 7m RON, compared with a 1.2m RON loss in the third quarter of 2009.
During the nine-month period, the largest part of underwritten premiums, namely 655m RON, was registered on the car segment, where almost 70% were auto liability (RCA) policies.
"We grew on all market segments and we're trying to diversify our portfolio, but given the difficult economic period mandatory policies are the best-sellers. This is starting to be seen on the home insurance segment as well, but voluntary policies also sell very well, on this segment, too," Radu Mustăţea, chairman of Astra Asigurări board, told ZF.
