Medical services operator Medas is investing over 5 million euros in a hospital in the Piaţa Victoriei area of Bucharest, with the facility to open at the end of 2011.
"The hospital will be designed for surgical specialties and will have 40 beds," said Nicoleta Claudia Manu, deputy general manager of Medas.
The facility will employ 50 to 100 (contract workers included) people, with the company currently having over 400 employees.
The Medas hospital is not the first to be announced in the area. The Sanador network of clinics is set to open a 120-bed hospital in a rented building, but in the surrounding area there is already one sizeable Sanador clinic, as well as an Anima clinic.
In order to finance the hospital, Medas will use both its own resources and external ones. As for the breakeven, Manu said it depends on the progression of the economy, but it could be reached within three to five years.
"Until the end of 2009 revenues from the House (National Health Insurance House i.e.) accounted for 60%, while the rest were accounted for by the private sector. Following a policy change, our target is now for the percentage generated by the private sector to exceed that from the House," Manu added.
According to Trade Registry data, Centrul Medical Med-As posted 19.3 million RON (4.5 million euros) in turnover last year. The medical services provider is controlled by Simona and Abd Halal Ateia.
