The management of STX OSV shipyard (the former Aker Tulcea), controlled by South Korea's STX Shipbuilding, says it has managed to turn around the company financially this year, so that 2010 will be a profitable year.
In 2008 and 2009, the Tulcea shipyard reported losses of 48m RON (13m euros) and 15.9m RON (3.7m euros) respectively, though its turnover climbed by 39.4% to 719.7m RON (170.2m euros) last year alone.
STX OSV Tulcea last year became Romania's second biggest shipyard, beating, in terms of turnover, Şantierul Naval Constanţa (SNC), owned by businessman Gheorghe Bosînceanu, whose turnover dropped in 2009. Korea's STX also owns the Brăila shipyard, whose turnover in 2009 rose by 42% to 117.6m euros, topping Damen Galaţi ship builder, which reported 103.8m-euro turnover in the same period.
"In 2010, although turnover slightly dropped from 2009, we will be profitable at the end of the year. The company's turnaround is one of the year's achievements. At the same time, we managed to modernise all the key points of production. (...)," stated Tudorel Ţopa, general manager of STX OSV Tulcea.
