Drugmaker Terapia Ranbaxy in Cluj, held by an Indian group, has exported 13 million euros' worth of Faringosept, a well-known Romanian lozenge brand, double as much as in 2009, to countries such as Russia and Ukraine. This compares with just 1.8 million-euro sales of the product in Romania.
"A harsh winter is expected in Russia and Ukraine," said Dragos Damian about the reasons for the doubling exports.
Faringosept, one of the oldest Romanian drug brands, accounts for 86% of the company's overall exports. Faringosept was launched 62 years ago and currently competes with brands such as Strepsils and Tantum Verde.
The ex works price of a Faringosept pack is 5 RON (1.2 euros), according to the company. In Romanian drugstores, the price comes to 8-9 RON (1.9 euros), and is not cheaper in Russia. The Romanian lozenge market amounts to 10 million euros a year.
Terapia Ranbaxy, one of the leading players on the Romanian drug market, posted a 20% sales rise this year to 350 million RON (83 million euros), exports excluded.
