Energy generated by wind farms is likely to supply over 333,000 houses with electricity this year, almost three times more than last year.
The spectacular leap is not visible, though, from the comparison against 2010, but against 2009, when the "windmills" installed in Romania fuelled only around 5,800 houses, 57 times less than the level likely to be reached this year.
"In 2011, we estimate a wind energy production of 800 GWh. In 2010, production in the first 11 months reached 205 GWh and we expect 270 GWh for the entire year. In 2009, wind energy generation stood at 14 GWh," say the representatives of Transelectrica, the national grid operator.
The energy production indicated by Transelectrica points to the booming investments in wind farms, a segment that was practically one of the few where, even amid the crisis, earmarked sums rose several times year on year.
However, the real boom will come this year, when, according to Transelectrica data, wind energy is likely to supply around 333,000 houses with electricity, with the "wind electricity" to weigh over 1% in Romania's electricity consumption.
