Hochland Romania, the biggest dairy producer domestically, believes falling consumption will further impact the domestic market in the coming months, with upbeat estimates pointing only to stagnation for the entire year.
According to the latest data provided by MEMRB research firm, the foodstuff segment in the first ten months of last year dropped by 5.6% in terms of value against the same period of 2009.
In the field of dairy products, cheese products fell by 13.1% in terms of value, milk by 13.9%, with yoghurt as the only product category that posted a positive trend in the analysed period, with consumption rising by 5.2% in terms of value.
Whereas large companies have coped with the falling market well, Sergiu Mititelu, Hochland Romania's CEO, says small companies were the victims of the dairy industry crisis.
"The lack of cash is still the main problem generated by recession for many Romanian companies. (...)," Mititelu says.
