The first Ford "made in Romania" was uncovered yesterday evening in Geneva, ahead of the Geneva Motor Show, the biggest event in the European industry this spring, with production to start by the end of this year at the Craiova plant.
The uncovering of the new model comes almost three and a half years after the American company signed the privatisation contract with the Romanian state in Frankfurt in 2007.
B-Max will replace the current Fusion, which has been manufactured since the beginning of the last decade, and will be in direct competition with models such as Opel Meriva, Citroën C3 Picasso and Renault Modus. Ford Fusion was launched on the European market in 2002 and is currently the "oldest" model in the American carmaker's range.
B-Max production will amount to almost 150,000 units next year, with over 80% to be exported to European markets. Ford expects at least 15,000-20,000 B-Max units to sell on the Romanian market.
