Romanian agriculture will not lose its appeal for foreign investors as long as the price of agricultural land stays low, otherwise investors will shift to other countries in the region, says Robert Arsene, general manager of Agricover, one of the most important agricultural groups on the domestic market, with turnover worth above 150m euros.
"Should agricultural prices rise, investors will move to Ukraine or Moldova. (...)," says Robert Arsene, 44, who has been running Agricover since 2007.
Agricover group is held by Iranian investors who also control Prodal '94, the producer of Stalinskaya and Wembley, in Romania.
The area of the agricultural land held by foreigners in Romania is difficult to calculate as the Agriculture and Rural Development Ministry does not have such data. The land area leased or owned by Romanian investors can be put at 3-5% of the total agricultural land, around 300,000 hectares.
