TV and telecom service providers will be required to provide more information on their customers and the revenues they derive.
Information considered confidential by communications operators until now - such as the number of Romanians surfing the Internet via the mobile phone or the value of certain acquisitions will be reported to the National Authority for Management and Regulation in Communications (ANCOM) by companies, with the institution to include part of it in its half-year public reports.
ANCOM used a set rules put in place almost five years ago to collect data and draw up reports on the local communications market, so that information about certain market segments had lost its relevance. For instance, ANCOM regarded as high-speed any Internet connection over 128 kbps, yet the market is now offering fixed Internet with speeds of up to 120 Mbps. Along with the new set of regulations, which was not accepted quietly by operators, ANCOM will rank connections by five speed categories and by the location the service is provided, either rural or urban.
ANCOM also requested for the first time and will publish data on the number of users surfing the Internet via their mobile phones and on the number of those using data cards sold by mobile telephony providers to access the Internet.
Communications operators will also report how many customers they have for their service packages, what revenues they get and where the customers are located, either in urban or rural areas. They will also have to report acquisitions of other operators, for how much, as well as how much they invested locally and abroad.
The first reporting compliant with the new requirements should be done by August 10, 2011, covering the six months from January 1 through June 30.
