While state officials are often saying it is these major investments that can turn Romania into an important regional energy player, and domestic companies have been awaiting them as a rescue after two years of crisis, Tarniţa-Lăpuşteşti hydropower station, reactors 3 and 4 of Cernavodă nuclear power station, Romania-Turkey submarine cable, AGRI and the carbon capture warehouse of south-western Romania have not gone beyond the research phase.
"Romania needs to operate major investments in electricity generation. We are now at a moment when we have to choose the technologies with which we're going ahead," believes Ionuţ Purica, an energy and environment expert with the Romanian Academy.
