Demand for mobile telephony services, a market worth over 2.3 billion euros a year, continues to be unstable, failing to settle either for stagnation or a growth trend, says Panos Makris, commercial director of Cosmote, no. 3 on the market.
"We cannot draw a firm conclusion that the crisis is over, and we have left recession behind. There are still ups and downs when it comes to demand. At least in the last 16-17 months, since I have been in Romania, the market has had better and weaker periods all the time. We have to see stability and strong growth to say that at least in the telecom industry we are entering a better stage," said the Cosmote representative. "A rebound of the market is yet to be seen. January and February were not spectacular months, but March seems to be much better," added Makris, who is in charge of Cosmote's sales, marketing, customer relations and retail, and has 1,700 people subordinated to him.
Cosmote, which estimates the Romanian economy will return to growth in the second part of the year, hopes more and more of its customers (nearly 7 million in December 2010), will start to use mobile Internet services increasingly more.
Cosmote launched 3G mobile Internet in April 2010, which compares with Vodafone in 2005 and Orange in 2006.
