Romanian art investments brought average yields of 40% in euros last year, way above the gains generated by investments in equity, gold or the euro.
The Romanian art market index, calculated by Artmark auction house, and which includes over 100 artists, registered an average yield of 40% calculated in euros in 2010. Last year, the main bourse index, BET, posted a 12.3% increase calculated in lei, while gold rose by 38% in lei and the euro went up by around 1.4% against the leu.
However, the high returns brought by art are associated with matching risks. Unlike equity investments, art placements are more risky as the artwork market is little liquid, opaque and unregulated.
According to Artmark calculations, the average annual yield of the Romanian art market over the past 16 years hit 36%.
"I do not think we're witnessing a Romanian art market bubble. Also, I do not believe there is the risk of the art marketing collapsing in the next 7-10 years as in Romania the market is still in its early stages. (...)," said Manuela Plăpcianu, executive manager with Artmark.
