Albalact Alba Iulia (ALBZ), Romania's biggest dairy producer listed on the Bourse, saw turnover rise by more than 30% in the first quarter from a year ago, from 64.4m lei (15.5m euros) to 85.2m lei (20.6m euros).
"We had a major increase, especially against the market context, we boosted turnover by 32% compared with the first quarter of 2010. The increase is generated by volumes, as well as value. We can see the results of the things we have been preparing since last year in terms of logistics, sales and marketing," says Raul Ciurtin, 39, Albalact's chairman and general manager.
However, in the first three months of this year the income derived by Albalact, a company controlled by Ciurtin family, shrank by 43% in lei from 4.6m lei (1.1m euros) to 2.6m lei (0.6m euros).
The profit decline comes after 2010 income decreased by 75% from 2009 as a result of the company's strategy targeting a widening market share, so that the transport capacity was boosted by 50% in the wake of a 2.5m-euro investment.
"Profit was hurt in the third and fourth quarters of 2010, we made the decision to keep growth plans, even though we sacrificed profit and this is what we still want".
