Lukoil Romania, the third leading player on the local oil market, has budgeted over 5.6 billion lei (almost 1.4 billion euros) in business for this year, 23% higher than last year, company officials said.
This is how the Russians at Lukoil set out to surpass the financial performance of 2008, a year all players on the market say was one of significant growth, followed by two years of recession in a row. Lukoil's business overshot the 1.2 billion-euro mark in 2008.
Although demand for fuel may stagnate this year, oil companies will stand to gain from the high prices of petrol and diesel that have recently gone past 6 lei per litre. The petrol has become over 5% more expensive since the beginning of the year, while the diesel price has gone up by almost 9%.
Lukoil owns 300 filling stations in Romania. It also started branching out into electricity generation and does not rule out green power generation projects.
