The healthcare industry, which has the biggest complaints against the state, is actually one of the winners of the economic crisis and the sector with the highest growth of the last five years, with both drug sales and the National Health Insurance House's budget doubling in that period.
Recent information shows that Robert Popescu, CEO of the A&D Pharma group, the biggest player in the local pharmaceutical industry, earned 406,000 euros in gross compensation last year, which is almost 24,000 euros in net amount per month. This is the highest publicly revealed salary of a Romanian executive and probably the highest salary in the pharmaceutical industry considering the size of the company.
His compensation was revealed on the London Stock Exchange where the company is listed. It was double the salary of 2008, and comes at the time when the state, one of A&D Pharma's main clients had an extremely difficult year.
"This is a high salary. Even though there are more such salaries among executives, they are few and very close to this amount (24,000 euros i.e.)," says George Butunoiu, one of the best-known headhunters on the market.
In comparison, the people at the helm of the biggest banks in the system get fixed salaries worth 20,000 to 25,000 euros, but the variable bonuses may double the amount so that they actually make 40,000 to 50,000 euros, market information reveals.
