Foreign airlines Lufthansa, Austrian Airlines and Swiss, which were integrated two years ago into the German group, carried one million passengers last year on the Romanian market, 10% more than in the preceding year.
"This market was key in the investment strategy of Lufthansa in the past few years and will continue to be an important market in the future, as well. This year we expect a 10% rise in the number of passengers carried," said German-born Stefan Versemann, 50, general manager of the group in charge of Romania and the Republic of Moldova. According to the latest data available, the overall airline market (traditional and low-cost) amounted to 9 million passengers two years ago.
The three foreign airlines, which will operate 147 flights a week to Frankfurt, Munich, Düsseldorf, Vienna and Zurich, are planning to consolidate their presence on the Romanian market this year by boosting capacity and flight frequency starting with the summer flights schedule.
The biggest contributor to the overall number of passengers recorded by the Lufthansa group was the Lufthansa company, which carried 615,000 people last year.
