Austrians, Swiss, and French tourism industry operators have come to Romania with maps, flyers, and brochures, while Romanian hotel and pension owners in the mountains say "we have no ski areas".
"Romania has become a very important market for us where we seek to be present with promotional campaigns, that is why we are here," said Gordana Malic, representative of tourism organisation Atout France. Austrian tourism association Amade also allocated a 50,000-euro budget to promote ski resorts in Salzburg land, which expects up to 100,000 Romanian tourists this year.
Although Romania is one of the poorest countries in the EU, with a GDP per capita significantly lower than the European average, foreigners do not seem to be very concerned about that and send representatives of their tourist associations to attract Romanian clients to ski resorts. On the other hand, mountain areas in Romania are not promoted because of the lack of such associations.
"Unfortunately, Romania does not have associations because it does not have ski areas," said George Copos, who owns three hotels in Poiana Braşov resort via Ana Hotels company.
