Gandul reads about the decision of the Transports ministry to impose mandatory winter tires for all cars on winter time. The decision will create a wealth for those selling tires and apparently, will cut costs of the ministry incurred during winter time to unclog roads.
Transports minister Anca Boagiu declared for Gandul that the idea occurred to her as she travelled to Prahova Valley and because it snowed a bit, car accidents happened because they were all equipped with summer tires.
In the time spam between the week when it announced the mandatory decision and last Thursday when it announced that it will be implemented starting November 2011, sales for tires increased by 20-25% and their prices went up.
Boagiu explained that this measure will cut costs of the ministry as normally the ministry pays about 1,050 to 1,500 lei / hour to unclog cars that block traffic. According to the newspaper, last year, losses amounted to about 470,000 euro.
If all 3.5 million cars in Romania would get new tires, that would mean a cash in of 1.4 billion euro.
