Lawyer Sebastian Guţiu, 34, who has been running the Bucharest office of Austrian firm Schoenherr for nearly two years, will become equity partner of the law firm next year, after being promoted, alongside four other lawyers in the region, two from the Czech Republic and two from Serbia.
The new appointments bring Schoenherr, one of the major law firms in the region, with a team of over 300 lawyers in 12 countries, to 24 equity partners, i.e. partners that share the firm's profit at the end of the year.
"This is the first time since the firm's establishment that Schoenherr appoints partners from outside of Austria. But this is a normal step considering that offices outside Austria now generate as much as 60% of the firm's revenues, with the Bucharest office contributing 12-13% of the turnover, being the second biggest after the one in Vienna," explained Guţiu.
He has been working at Schoenherr since 2001 and took over at the helm of the local office in early 2008, but as a local partner.
"My income will be much less predictable because it will depend on the results of all 12 Schoenherr offices," explains Guţiu, who coordinates the real estate team and provides consulting services in the energy sector.
According to market information, equity partners of law firms in the region can earn between 500,000 and one million euros, depending on the firm's profit margin, number of partners and on each partner's share of the earnings.
