Nuclearelectrica, one of the most important energy producers in Romania, which operates the two reactors of the Cernavodă nuclear plant slipped into the red in the first half of the year, even though it posted operating income.
Therefore, according to the financial data, the company posted 192.2 million RON (46.3 million euro) losses in the first six months of 2010, compared with a gross profit worth 108.6 million RON (25.6 million euros) in the first half of 2009.
"The gross income of the first half of 2010 is negative and was due to the financial loses as a result of the depreciation of the RON against the other currencies and to the booking - as required by the law, of the unfavourable exchange rate differences for all the loans taken throughout the investment in the Reactor 2 of the nuclear power station," the representatives of the company explain. Therefore, even though the operating income was 43.7 million RON (10.5 million euros), three times lower than in the first six months of 2009, the financial losses stood at some 236 million RON (about 57 million euros), almost six times higher than in the first half of last year.
The turnover varied only slightly during the period considered, from 737.1 million RON (174.2 million euros) to 716.9 million RON (172.9 million euros).
