Arval, the operational leasing company controlled by French group BNP Paribas, estimates an increase in business on the Romanian market by up to 25%, according to statements of company officials, to around 25 million euros.
One of the factors that contributed to boosting the business towards the end of the year was the announcement regarding the new pollution tax, which will come into force on January 1st. The future tax will be paid including for Euro 5 cars, with the Euro 5 emission standards to become mandatory for all new cars sold within the European Union, which are currently exempt from the tax.
"The Arval fleet has already reached the level we have targeted for this year in November, and will continue to grow until the end of the year, especially amid talks on the pollution tax. Some clients were in a hurry to see their fleets delivered in 2010 in order to avoid paying the tax next year," said Christian Busch, managing director of Arval Romania.
The company currently holds a fleet of over 3,400 cars, up from 2,700 cars at the end of last year.
"The new tax can be considered an advantage if we look at this year's results, but a disadvantage if we think of the beginning of next year (...)," Busch added.
