Out of the 100 most valuable companies in Romania, the state holds stakes only in 28, be they majority or minority ones, with 22 of them operating in the energy sector. According to calculations made by ZF and by investment advisor Capital Partners in the Top 100 Most Valuable Companies in Romania, the state's riches, measured as stakes in the 28 companies, amount to 15 billion euros, with over 10 billion euros being fetched exclusively by the energy sector.
Hidroelectrica, Nuclearelectrica, Romgaz, Transgaz, Petrom, the yet to be privatised Electricas, and minority stakes that the state still holds in companies such as Petrom, are the biggest assets still in possession of the Romanian state.
The importance of the energy sector was apparent this year, as well, when, for the first time in the five years since ZF has been publishing the yearbook of the most valuable companies in Romania, a state-held energy company made it into the top three, leaving behind a services company. Hidroelectrica, Romania's biggest energy producer, worth over 3.3 billion euros, replaced telecom giant Orange as the second most valuable company in 2009.
