Cigarette exports accounted for 1% of the overall volume of Romanian exports last year, i.e. around 360 million euros, according to data supplied to ZF by the National Association of Exporters and Importers in Romania.
Cigarette manufacturers Philip Morris and Japan Tobacco International (JTI) thus rank among Romania's biggest exporters in the fast moving consumer goods sector.
JTI, which posted over 820 million euros in turnover in 2009 through its two companies - JTI Manufacturing (the Pipera factory) and J.T. International (the sales and distribution company) - last year exported around 35% of the factory's production, compared with 20% in 2009.
"In 1993 we started our business in Romania by importing Camel from Germany. Since in 2009, the JTI factory on the Pipera platform has been exporting Camel to Germany. In fact, all filter-less Camel cigarettes sold in EU member states are produced in Bucharest. We also export many other brands, from South America to Asia and Australia," said Gilda Lazăr, corporate affairs manager of JTI Romania, a company that currently employs around 850.
The cigarette market, estimated at over two billion euros, consists of three international companies - British American Tobacco, Philip Morris and JTI - which control the biggest segment of the FMCG market.
