Romanians bought LCD and plasma TVs worth almost 60 million euros in the last two months of 2009, almost as many as in the first six months of the year, as a result of the price cuts and holiday purchases, a report by GfK Romania reveals.
All in all, 212 million euros' worth of TV sets were sold in Romania last year, 32.6 million euros of which coming from sales of CRT TVs, and 179.8 million euros from sales of latest generation TVs, according to GfK data.
People in Romania bought half a million LCD TVs in 2009, according to an estimate by LG Romania, one of the biggest players on the market. By the end of last October, 283,000 CRT TVs and 313,000 LCD and plasma TVs had been sold in Romania, GfK data reveals.
"Compared with December 2008, audio and TV sales went down 30%. Still, for these products - plasma and LCD TVs, audio and home cinema systems and portable media players - a comparison with November 2009 shows that sales almost doubled in December 2009 (...)," GfK officials said.
