Six Romanian construction companies and eleven foreign ones were yesterday declared winners of the nine sections of motorway on the Nădlac-Sibiu motorway, that the National Company of Motorways and National Roads in Romania (CNADNR) put up for tender at the end of last year. The winning contractors submitted bids with a cumulated value of around 1 billion euros, although CNADNR had estimated that the nine sections of motorway would cost more, i.e. 1.4 billion euros. In other words, the 183 kilometres of motorway will cost 5.4 million euros each on average.
The winners include some of the biggest local construction companies, which managed to post cumulated turnovers of hundreds of millions of euros even in times of crisis: Romstrade, controlled by businessman Nelu Iordache, Spedition UMB and Tehnostrade (both companies held by Dorinel Umbrărescu), Straco Grup (Alexandru and Traian Horpos) and Euroconstruct Trading'98 (Dan Besciu and Sorin Vulpescu).
The construction market recorded a 40% cumulated decline in 2009 and 2010 and the investments of the Transport Ministry in infrastructure have been seen by many representatives of construction companies as the breath of fresh air they needed to revive their businesses.
